Powder Sugar Donut Holes

My favorite part of a glazed donut is the donut hole.  So when I saw this donut hole recipe on the Internet I knew I had to make them.  Especially since they did not require yeast or for the dough to rise.

Time to make the Donuts

We are digging out after winter storm Saturn (yep, the Weather Channel had a name for this storm) came through last night and dumped around 7 inches of snow on us from 8pm last night until daylight this morning

This morning Cally and I made Donuts.  I love donuts!  Especially warm Donuts.  These are super easy to make as they are made from Jumbo Buttermilk Biscuits from a can.

These little buggers are so easy to make and oh so good.  My favorite is the powdered sugar donut holes.

Super Easy Donuts
source: Pillsbury.com

1 can Jumbo Buttermilk Biscuits (I used Meijer brand)
Oil for frying
Toppings of your choice

Heat oil or deep fryer until oil reaches 350 degrees (I used a skillet and a candy thermometer)

Take each biscuit and flatten slightly, cut hole in center of each biscuit. Save the center for donut holes.

After oil reaches 350 degrees.  Carefully place the biscuits and donut holes in the oil and fry each side for about 30 seconds or until golden brown.  Drain on paper towels and then put toppings on warm donuts.

We used powdered sugar (these were my favorite) cinnamon sugar and glazed with sprinkles.  For the glazed donuts I put about 1/2 C of Vanilla can frosting in microwave for 20 seconds, or until a little runny.  Then dip your donuts in the glaze and sprinkle the tops.

Banana Donuts

If Banana bread is one of your favorite treats you will LOVE these donuts.  I used my donut maker that Cally gave me and I got to thinking about it, the donut maker is really just baking these donuts so why could I not use bread or cake recipes for these donuts and wallah the Banana Donut was made.

I tried them right out of the maker and they were dry, but add the sugary glaze and they were amazing.  My favorite was the ones that have chopped walnuts sprinkled on them...those I would call Banana Nut Donuts.  They sure were yummy and I want more!  I will definitely be making these again.  I halved my banana bread recipe so if you want to make bread instead of donuts just double the recipe below.  I think it would be good with the glaze drizzled over the loaf of bread.

My next experiment is going to be strawberry donuts using my Sunsational Cake recipe...maybe this weekend so keep watching for yummy strawberry donuts with a lemony sour glaze or maybe a cream cheese glaze, I am making myself hungry!

You can bake these in a donut maker or Wilton now has a donut pan that you use in the oven that would work just as well.

I am wanting to get a boat pan and make homemade Twinkies, I have been seeing recipes for these on different blogs lately, they look yummy!

Banana Donuts

1/2 C sugar
1/4 C oleo
1 egg
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1 C flour
1/2 t soda
1/2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt

glaze:

1/2 C powder sugar
2 T melted butter
1/2 t vanilla
1 T hot water

sprinkles or chopped walnuts (optional)

Cream together the sugar and oleo.  Add eggs and mashed bananas, mix.  Add flour, soda, baking powder, and salt and mix until well blended.  Bake in a donut maker per package instructions or use a Wilton donut pan.  If making a loaf of bread double the above bread recipe and place in a  loaf pan baking for 45 minutes at 325 degrees.

for glaze: mix all glaze ingredients.  Dip donuts into glaze and place them on a cooling rack so the excess glaze can drip off, sprinkle the wet donuts with nuts or sprinkles of your choice.

Donuts

I used a few of my Christmas presents tonight.  I made these donuts with my new mini donut maker that Cally gave me and I used my vanilla bean paste that Billy gave to me.
The vanilla bean paste is awesome.  I used it in cheesecakes this weekend too and the vanilla bean seeds can be seen all over the cheese cake.  The flavor taste like you have used triple the vanilla.  I love it!

The donut maker worked good.  I used the plain donut recipe but instead of using milk I used pumpkin spice coffee creamer.  The glaze has both butter and water and it has a nice buttery taste to it.  When I glazed the donuts I just dipped the donut down into the bowl of glaze and then sat them on a cooling rack, it worked perfect.

My overall opinion of the donuts was that they were a little dry inside but the glaze was good.  Next time I think I will try powdered sugar donuts

Basic Donut Recipe
Bella

1 C flour
1/2 C sugar
1 T baking powder
1 egg
1/2 C milk ( I used coffee creamer )
1/2 vanilla ( I used vanilla bean paste )
4 T cooking oil

Stir dry ingredients together, add egg, vanilla and milk and beat 1 minute with electric mixer.  Add oil and continue to beat 1 minute more

glaze:

1 C powdered sugar
3 T melted butter
3/4 t vanilla
2T hot water

Mix all together until smooth.
